Retention & DR copies
Cold storage ($0.01/GB-month EFS, $0.0125 EBS archive, $0.03 DynamoDB) carries a 90-day minimum. S3 backups use a low-cost warm tier ($0.035/GB-month) after 60 days in warm instead. RDS, Aurora and DynamoDB PITR have no lower tier.
Days recovery points stay in warm storage before lifecycle transition.
Portion of protected GB billed at the lower-tier rate after transition; ignored for services without one.
$0.04/GB transfer for EFS and DynamoDB, $0.02/GB for S3, EBS, RDS and Aurora, plus destination-region storage at the warm rate.
DynamoDB restores bill $0.15/GB, EFS and S3 $0.02/GB; EBS, RDS and Aurora snapshot restores have no AWS Backup charge.

Why We Built This Tool
Backup costs split across service-native snapshot lines and AWS Backup-native lines — easy to miss cold-tier minimums and multi-region duplication.
What Problem It Solves
- Cold 90-day trap. Transitioning to cold before 90 days can bill the minimum without savings.
- Cross-region double storage. DR copies bill transfer plus independent destination-region storage.
- DynamoDB PITR premium. Continuous backup bills 2× on-demand backup for the same table size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is DynamoDB backup more expensive than EBS or EFS?
DynamoDB on-demand backups bill $0.10/GB-month warm storage; continuous backup (PITR) bills $0.20/GB-month of source table size. EFS, EBS and S3 backups bill $0.05/GB-month, RDS $0.095 and Aurora $0.021 above the free allocation equal to provisioned storage. The DynamoDB premium pays for fully-managed point-in-time recovery.
What is the 90-day cold storage minimum?
AWS Backup cold storage ($0.01/GB-month EFS, $0.0125 EBS Snapshots Archive, $0.03 DynamoDB) requires a 90-day minimum. Recovery points deleted before 90 days in cold bill the remaining days. Only transition to cold when retention exceeds 90 days.
What is the S3 low-cost warm storage tier?
S3 backups cannot go to cold storage. Instead, a tiering configuration moves backup data that has stayed at least 60 days in warm storage ($0.05/GB-month) to a low-cost warm tier at $0.035/GB-month, with a one-time $0.01 per 1,000 objects transitioned (not modeled here). Use the tier slider to set how much S3 backup data sits in that tier.
How does cross-region copy pricing work?
Cross-region copies from us-east-1 bill $0.04/GB for EFS and DynamoDB and $0.02/GB for S3, EBS, RDS and Aurora (to most Regions), plus destination-region recovery point storage at the warm or cold rate. Multi-destination DR multiplies storage and transfer linearly.
Is cross-account backup copy free?
Yes — cross-account copies have no inter-account transfer fee. The destination account pays standard recovery point storage; the source account pays source-side storage charges.
Why do backup costs appear under the underlying service in Cost Explorer?
Native snapshots (EBS, RDS) appear under those services. AWS Backup-native features — continuous DynamoDB backup, cold tier, cross-region copies, Audit Manager — appear under the AWS Backup line.
Where do these backup prices come from?
Rates are AWS published us-east-1 list prices (AWS Backup pricing), pricing as of 2026-10-17.
