DynamoDB Cost Tips
- On-Demand for spiky traffic: Pay per request when utilization is unpredictable.
- Provisioned for steady heat: Flat workloads with known RCU/WCU save at scale.
- GSIs multiply cost: Each GSI consumes its own capacity — model separately in production.
- PITR tradeoff: Worth it for prod tables; skip for ephemeral caches.

FactualMinds reviews DynamoDB the way we do in engagements — choosing on-demand vs provisioned with auto-scaling, pruning over-provisioned GSIs, and adding TTL to expire cold items. Typical AWS cost reviews cut spend 20–40%.

Why We Built This Tool
DynamoDB pricing splits across capacity mode, storage, and optional PITR — On-Demand vs provisioned is the first fork with a large cost swing. We quantified both paths with October 2026 us-east-1 rates.
What Problem It Solves
- Mode comparison. See both pricing models with the same workload inputs.
- PITR toggle. Add continuous backup cost explicitly.
- Free tier modeling. 25 GB always; WCU/RCU only in provisioned mode.
- Streams & Global Tables. Optional CDC and multi-region write multipliers.
- Storage line item. $0.25/GB-month separated from capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do these prices come from?
DynamoDB us-east-1 list prices as of October 2026: On-Demand $0.625/M writes and $0.125/M reads; provisioned $0.00065/WCU-hr and $0.00013/RCU-hr; storage $0.25/GB; PITR $0.20/GB.
Are GSIs included?
No — enter aggregate capacity for your table only. Each global secondary index bills its own reads/writes or WCU/RCU.
What is a read/write unit?
Standard strongly consistent read = 1 RCU for 4 KB; write = 1 WCU for 1 KB. Larger items consume multiple units.
DAX or streams?
Streams read request units are modeled via the Streams slider ($0.02 per 100k). DAX cluster hours and export to S3 are not included. Global Tables uses a 2× write multiplier for a two-region setup.
Does free tier apply to On-Demand?
The always-free 25 GB storage credit applies in both modes when the toggle is on. The 25 WCU / 25 RCU always-free allowance applies to provisioned mode only — On-Demand has no equivalent always-free request units in this model.
When is On-Demand cheaper?
Typically at low or spiky traffic. Steady high QPS often shifts savings to provisioned or auto-scaling policies.
