Storage & runtime
gp3 $0.115/GB-mo · baseline 3000 IOPS (12,000 above 400 GB) · extra IOPS $0.02/IOPS-mo. io1 $0.125/GB + $0.1/IOPS.
gp3: billed above baseline. io1: all provisioned IOPS billed.
gp3 includes 125 MB/s; extra throughput bills at $0.08/MB/s-mo.

Single-AZ vs Multi-AZ
RDS Cost Tips
- gp3 baseline: Start with gp3 unless you have proven IOPS needs — io1 premium adds up.
- Multi-AZ when required: Production HA doubles compute and provisioned storage; dev/test rarely needs it.
- Reserved instances: After right-sizing, 1-year RI can cut compute ~30–40%.
- Aurora check: IO-heavy workloads may fit Aurora I/O-Optimized — see our RDS vs Aurora guide.
Want this applied to your real account?
FactualMinds reviews RDS the way we do in engagements — right-sizing instances onto Graviton, moving io1 volumes to gp3 where IOPS allow, and matching Multi-AZ to real RTO needs. Typical AWS cost reviews cut spend 20–40%.

DBAs, backend leads, and FinOps partners budgeting PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MariaDB on RDS. Teams debating Multi-AZ, gp3 sizing, or io1 for latency-sensitive OLTP.
Why We Built This Tool
RDS bills split across instance hours, storage GB, and IOPS — Multi-AZ doubles compute and provisioned storage. We built this from the us-east-1 rate card we use in database cost reviews.
What Problem It Solves
- HA cost delta. Single-AZ vs Multi-AZ with storage doubling.
- Engine toggle. PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB rate cards.
- gp3 IOPS & throughput. Real overage rates above baseline — not placeholders.
- RI discounts. Approximate 1-yr / 3-yr commitment multipliers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do these prices come from?
RDS On-Demand us-east-1 instance and storage list prices as of October 2026. Multi-AZ doubles instance hourly and provisioned storage. RI discounts are approximate No Upfront multipliers (~35% / ~55%), not exact Reserved Instance rate cards.
Are backups included?
Automated backup storage up to DB size is free; backup storage beyond provisioned DB size bills at S3 rates — not modeled here.
How does gp3 IOPS billing work?
gp3 includes 3,000 IOPS (12,000 for volumes ≥400 GB) and 125 MB/s. Extra IOPS bill at $0.02/IOPS-month and extra throughput at $0.08/MB/s-month. io1 bills all provisioned IOPS at $0.10/IOPS-month.
What about Aurora?
This tool targets RDS provisioned instances. For Aurora ACU/I/O pricing use our Aurora calculator and RDS vs Aurora comparison.
Licensing?
PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB are open-source on RDS — no separate license line. Oracle/SQL Server licensing is different and not modeled here.
How accurate is this estimate?
Compute and storage arithmetic matches published rates for listed instances. Real bills add Performance Insights, Proxy, Extended Support, and data transfer.
What does RDS Extended Support cost?
When a major version (for example PostgreSQL 13 or MySQL 8.0) leaves standard support, RDS enrolls it in Extended Support at $0.10 per vCPU-hour in years 1–2 and $0.20 per vCPU-hour in year 3 (us-east-1). A 2-vCPU db.r8g.large adds about $146/month in years 1–2, more than half its $0.239/hr instance rate. Not modeled above; upgrading the major version avoids it.
